G. Carroll Brown Iii

September 16, 1933 — July 11, 2024

Hilton Head Island

G. Carroll Brown,III died on Thursday July 11 at Broad Creek Care Center on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He was born on September 16, 1933 at the family home in Walterboro, SC and was educated at Wofford College and transferred to Florida Southern in Lakeland, Florida where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in business administration. Upon returning home to Walterboro, he and his first cousin bought a ready mix concrete plant which they made into a very profitable business which is still flourishing today. Their projects were very diverse including not only residential and commercial work, but schools, factories and sections of Interstate Highway 95. He served on the boards of several banks from the 1970s and into the early 2000s. An avid lover of the natural world, he converted his in laws’ cattle ranch near Yemassee into a timber farm and was named South Carolina Tree Farmer of the Year in 1985 and was also a Master Tree Farmer. He retired from the concrete business in the mid-nineties to concentrate on being a grandfather and participated in a program sponsored by a local church where he helped build handicap ramps for those who needed them. He believed that charity does indeed begin at home and he did what he could to help members of the community in need. In the sixties he spent his Sunday afternoons delivering prescriptions along with a carton of milk to the homes of children whose families lacked the funds to pay for them. He also helped with funeral expenses for those who weren’t able to do so for their loved ones. He loved his family as well as the natural world and loved nothing more than to walk in the woods to enjoy the beauty that surrounded him— the forest was his church where he communed with the Lord. He is survived by his wife of almost sixty-six years, Jane Nolan McTeer, daughter Ferebee Brown Ruffalo and her husband Dudley, son George C Brown, IV and his wife Tina, as well as three grandchildren; Jane Whaley Rogers, Zoie Brown and Dexter Brown, his sister, Dr. Margaret Brown Neville, and two nephews and one niece. A grave side service will be held Monday July 15 at Stokes Cemetery in Hendersonville, SC. Memorials may be made to Bethel Methodist Church in Walterboro.
