George W. Baranowski, age 93, of Bluffton, SC passed away June 19, 2014 at home after a short illness.
George Baranowski was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 02, 1921. He graduated with a Scholastic Attainment Award from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY in 1943. After graduation, he married Julia Dzwonczyk from Hopewell, Pennsylvania. During World War II, he sailed as Engineering Officer aboard the troop transport, TES Uruguay, 32,450 Tons. From 1943 to 1946, also as engineering officer, he sailed on various tankers, cargo ships and troop transports.
He was awarded in 1968, the Meritorious Alumni Service Award by the USMMA Alumni Association, for exemplifying the finest tradition of the Corps in serving the Alumni and his Alma Mater.
After the end of the War he returned as Boiler Plant Engineer with Mobil Oil Co. and as Brooklyn Refinery Plant Engineer for the closing of the Plant. He was promoted to District Engineer for Manhattan and Queens, NY, in overseeing construction of Mobil Service Stations and Terminals.
He retired from Mobil in 1973 and returned to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy as Project Engineer, overseeing the construction of Mallory Pier; Tomb's Field; Officer's Club' Marine Hoist Pier and Lift; and various other projects. He was president of the USMMA Officer's Club (1974-1975)
On May 22, 1984, he received the Bronze Medal Award from the Maritime Administration, Washington D.C., The award was given in recognition of highly competent performance of Official duties with the Department of Transportation.
He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Barbara) Mullin, of Bluffton, SC; Mrs. Michael (Dr. Christine) Klosterman of New Mexico; Mrs Randi (Debra) Daviadoff of Alpharetta, GA; a brother, Henry Baranowski of Hawthorne, CA and six grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Memorial mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Monday, June 30, 2014 at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 333 Fording Island Road, Bluffton with a reception to follow at St. Andrews Hall.
