George E. Campbell

George Ernest Campbell, 90, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2025, in Bluffton, South Carolina.

George was born May 23, 1935, in Grafton, ND, to Roch and Lydia (Pagote) Campbell. He was raised on the family’s farm east of Grafton, graduating from Grafton High School in 1953. George attended the University of North Dakota and entered the US Army in 1957. He enlisted in the US Army Signal Corp School and served in Germany until 1959. George began farming with his father and brothers, Ed and Ray, and continued farming in the Grafton area until retiring in 1999.

He married Lorraine Hanson on July 15, 1961, in Grafton ND. They made their home in Grafton until retirement, when they began spending winters in Bluffton, South Carolina. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary and George’s 90th birthday, with a celebration at which he danced to his favorite songs. In retirement, George and Lorraine cherished their time in South Carolina, where they embraced the rich music scene, southern cuisine, history, and warm climate.

George was a great lover of music of all genres, including Christian music, jazz, and the blues. He spent many years as a cantor at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grafton and sang solos at his children’s weddings. He could dance like Fred Astaire and would often dance double-time to the music, wearing his partner out within minutes.

George’s family will miss him greatly. He was a kind and steady presence. Though he lived with type 1 diabetes nearly his whole life, he approached each day with steadiness and perseverance.

George is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine; along with his devoted children Ryan (Trish) of Bluffton, SC, Michelle (Brad) Lutovsky of Eagan, MN, and Julie (Ron) Deutz of Fargo ND. He has six grandchildren: Nicholas Deutz, Spencer Deutz, Katelyn Roedler, Anthony Lutovsky, Temre Campbell and Mia Campbell. He was also blessed with great grandchildren: Adi, Ryder, McCoy, Cambelle, Carter and Theo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Lucille, Edward and Raymond.

Funeral services were held in Bluffton, SC and again in Grafton, ND in the spring. The family requests that all memorials be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
