George H. Fischer

February 12, 1927 — March 29, 2016

George Herman Fischer, 89, of Bluffton, SC, passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 29, 2016. George was born February 12, 1927 in Sacramento, CA to Herman and Cecil Carolyn Fischer. His family was steeped in history and the forming of early California. He served in World War II in the US Navy (USS Breton), from 1944 to 1946 and then graduated from UC Berkeley with an Electrical Engineering degree. He worked at Trailmobile for 37 years, retiring at 62 and then began a second career at Monon Corp. until finally retiring for good at 74; working just under 50 years in the truck trailer industry. George is survived by his wife of 63 years, Virginia, his 5 children: daughter Mary (Jack) Walsh, son Peter (Jo Kearney) Fischer, daughter Eileen Fischer, daughter Margaret (Vince) Oneal and son Paul (Jill) Fischer, and his 14 grandchildren: Monica Skeels, James Walsh, Teresa Bochula, Tyler Knodell, Benjamin Knodell, Alexander Knodell, Joseph Oneal, Kathleen Oneal, Carolyn Oneal, Robert Fischer, Angela Dreisbach, Kristen Fischer, Michael Fischer and Cassandra Fischer. He also had 6 great-grandchildren: Corinne Skeels, Jack Walsh, Elaine Knodell, Max Knodell, Lorelei Dreisbach and Mila Fischer and finally, a host of extended family throughout the country. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In his earlier years he enjoyed boating, gardening and golf. He was an avid reader and a member of St. Gregory The Great Church in Bluffton. He spent the last few years caring for Virginia often telling his children that she spent 60 years caring for him and now it was his turn to take care of her. His dedication was remarkable — a model for all who knew him to admire. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm, Friday, April 8, 2016, at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC 29910. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A private (family) reception will be held immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
