George A. Matzner Iii

June 4, 1928 — January 28, 2009

George A. Matzner III, formerly of Pocomoke City, MD, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Palm Meadows Village on Hilton Head Island, SC. He was born in High Point, NC on June 4, 1928, the son of the late Cleo Ridge Matzner and George A. Matzner, Jr. He graduated from high school in 1945 in Emporia, VA, and received a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Hamden Sydney College in Hamden Sydney, VA in 1949. From 1949-1952 Mr. Matzner taught English and foreign languages at Mathews County High School in Mathews, VA. In 1952 he joined the US Navy and served as a lieutenant for 4 years stationed primarily at the Chincoteague Naval Air Station in Chincoteague, VA. He worked as a civilian for the US Navy from 1956-1959 as a Personnel Specialist. In 1959 he joined NASA as a Personnel Officer at their Wallops Flight Center in Wallops Island, VA, where he worked for 32 years until his retirement in 1991.Mr. Matzner married the former Arlene Bennett of South Boston, VA on March 11, 1953 and was married to her for 44 years. He lived in Pocomoke City, MD for over 40 years, was a dedicated member of Pitts Creek Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed singing in the church choir and playing golf. He moved to Winder, GA in 1999 where he lived for 7 years before moving to Hilton Head Island in 2006.He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Thomas Buchanan of Bluffton, SC; a foster sister, Sue Todd of Knightdale, NC and her daughter Lisa May of Middlesex, NC; a sister-in-law, Inez Weaver of South Boston, VA; two nephews and their families, Donald Weaver of Halifax, VA and Robert Weaver of Boynton Beach, FL and; a cousin, Teresa Glasco of Sanford, NC. He was predeceased by his wife, Arlene, in 1997.A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head Island in the Honey Horn Chapel on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 10 a.m. The Rev. Louis Lunardini will preside. Burial will be held at a later date in Pocomoke City, MD. Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton, SC is assisting the family with their arrangements. (www.saulsfh.com)
