George Henry Mehrtens

November 21, 1938 – June 16, 2025

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of George Henry Mehrtens on Monday, June 16th, 2025 at the age of 86.

Born on November 21, 1938 to Mae and George Edward Mehrtens of Valhalla, NY, George lived life with a sense of adventure and as a result, was a consummate story-teller.

George attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy (‘60) in Kings Point, NY working in the maritime industry for several years. His career later led him to the field of aviation sales for Mobil Oil Corporation for over 35 years. His work took his family to New Rochelle and Mamaroneck, New York; Madrid, Spain; Tokyo, Japan; London and Surrey, England; and Great Falls, Virginia. In retirement, George and his beloved wife managed several Meineke Discount Muffler businesses; enjoyed traveling the world; diligently built two beautiful homes in Bluffton, SC; maintained a well-manicured yard; perfected his golf swing; loved the pursuit of finding hidden gem restaurants; engaged in long hours of online solitaire; and sent daily emails of jokes to friends and family.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Joan Mehrtens, his high school sweetheart with whom he shared 72 years of friendship and a marriage of 64 treasured years. He leaves behind his loving children: daughters Cathryn Mehrtens (Kim Frank) of Palm Springs, CA; and Elizabeth Leeb (Scott) of Holmdel, NJ; his younger brother: Allan Joseph Mehrtens of The Villages, FL; and four grandchildren: Hannah Emily Leeb, Gavin Clark Frank-Mehrtens, Claire Elise Frank-Mehrtens, and Zoe Caitlyn Leeb.

A private memorial service will be held to honor his memory at a later date. We invite those who knew George to remember him by sharing how he made an impact on their life on the Tribute Wall of this website.
