George Joseph Simoneaux, age 96, passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at his home in Bluffton, SC after a very brief illness.
He was born at home in the Savannah Sugar Refinery village in Port Wentworth, GA.
He was a graduate of Commercial High School in Savannah. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a gunner and radio operator aboard a Navy PBY aircraft.
He married Beverly McFarland on December 6, 1940. Beverly died on March 17th, and it was no great surprise that her devoted husband followed so quickly. They were married 75 years and had three children, Nancy (Andy) Shearouse, Lee (June), and Patrick (Patti). They have five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
George spent most of his life working and living at the Sugar Refinery, where he was known as the “silver fox”. He and his family spent their weekends and summers in Bluffton. After he retired in 1982, they spent even more time there and eventually moved to Bluffton permanently in 2010.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was the “DJ” for the Starlight Dance Club for 20 years.
He was the patriarch of a close and loving family. His leadership will be greatly missed.
The family will be receiving friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC 29910.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Port Wentworth, GA with burial following at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park-East.
