Trudy was born in Annapolis, Maryland on November 25, 1943 to Mary Therese (Baltimore) Buckmaster and John Henry Buckmaster, Sr. who predeceased her along with her brother Gerald A. Buckmaster. Trudy graduated from Annapolis High School in 1962. Her first marriage ended in divorce. She then moved to Rockville, Maryland with her two children and mother.
She attended secretarial school and began her career working at Soldiers Home Hospital in Washington, D.C. While living in Rockville, she met and married Emanuel “Manny” Horowitz. They moved to Ijamsville, Maryland in 1975 where they built their life together. She joined the firm of Toups & Loiederman which eventually became Loiederman Associates, Inc., a civil engineering firm. Trudy enjoyed a successful 35-year career as Corporate Secretary to A. Mario Loiederman. Trudy and Manny divorced but remained friends.
Trudy enjoyed her life to the fullest. She was an avid golfer. She loved skiing, camping, motorcycle riding, the beach, and traveling. She particularly loved all kinds of card games, board games, crossword puzzles, and playing Words With Friends. Trudy and her dear friend Lucia met playing in a golf tournament and began a wonderful friendship that lasted over 30 years. Together, they moved to Bethesda, Maryland in 1998 and shared a home, eventually buying a house in Derwood, Maryland. There were many fun gatherings and card games there with friends on the back porch. Lucia was always ready to cook for whomever wanted to drop in and Trudy would head out to get the fixin’s. They especially enjoyed visits from Nanny, Trudy’s mother. Lucia and Trudy were charter members of the Washington DC Chapter of Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA). They made many lasting friendships that go on to this day. One of Trudy’s proudest achievements was when she played in the EWGA National Tournament at The Doral Club in Florida in 1999. She won second place in the Gross Division, Third Flight. The beautiful crystal bowl she won sits proudly in the display case.
While playing in a golf event in Crystal River, Florida, Trudy met Harvey C. Smith. They married in 2005 and Trudy moved to Crystal River. She loved her time in Florida and again made many friends there. She heartily embraced Harvey’s family and friends, especially his grandchildren. They had a full life together with much happiness. Lucia made numerous trips to Florida and spent several winters there with them. Harvey passed away in January 2014. Once again Trudy and Lucia set out to look for a house together and settled in Sun City Hilton Head in 2014.
Trudy jumped right into Sun City Life. Some of her favorite things were the match-play golf events she played in with the Sun City Women’s Golf Association and rounds with The Tuesday Golf Gals. She loved playing SAMBA at the Canasta Club, Mahjong, and Rummiekub with her friends. Trudy volunteered at the Sun City Book Exchange and was an active member of Temple Oseh Shalom and the Sisterhood of Temple Oseh Shalom. Friday nights would find her on her iPad for Zoomed services.
Trudy was a most loving and giving person, a loyal friend and positive presence in so many lives. She is remembered for her smile and her sense of humor. She loved her family with all her heart and looked forward to their visits to Sun City as well as her trips to Maryland for family reunions. Her memory will live on in our hearts for many years to come.
