Gilbert Stuart Kimble

July 25, 1944 — April 9, 2020

Stuart Kimble, age 75 of Bluffton, S.C., died on April 9, 2020. Stuart was born in 1944 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Gertrude (Haines) and Gilbert T. Kimble. He grew up in the small village of Rancocas, NJ, and graduated from Rancocas Valley Regional High School in 1962. Stuart lived most of his adult life in Atlanta, GA, before retiring to the South Carolina lowcountry in 2014.

Proud to be a Terrapin, Stuart graduated from the University of Maryland in 1966 with a degree in Fire Protection Engineering. He applied his knowledge to the field of risk management and was a well-respected insurance brokerage executive in Atlanta. He spent 40 years of his professional career with Aon Corporation (formerly Alexander & Alexander).

Stuart was married for 36 years to his loving wife and dearest friend Joan (Perkins) Kimble, formerly of Burlington, NJ. He counted their daughter Anna Rebecca Kimble, residing in Ithaca, NY, as his life’s greatest blessing, describing her always as “amazing” and truly the pride of his life.

Stuart loved sports and played ALTA tennis for many years. When he moved to the Atlanta area in the 1970s, he adopted the city’s major league sports teams and became a dyed in the wool Atlanta Braves fan. He delighted in his annual trek to Florida to watch spring training games with family and friends. In addition to baseball and tennis, his other great passion was music of all sorts, especially enjoying the music of James Taylor. Throughout his life, Stuart was a dedicated church choir member, joyfully lending his bass voice in song.

A member of Lowcountry Presbyterian Church in Bluffton, Stuart held steadfastly to his strong Christian faith throughout his life. In the early 1970s, he was a charter member of Ray-Thomas Memorial Presbyterian Church in Marietta, GA. After moving to the city of Atlanta, Stuart and his family were members of Northwest Presbyterian Church for 20 years. Stuart served as an elder at each of the three Presbyterian churches where he belonged in his adult life.

A gentleman and a gentle man, Stuart loved life and viewed each day as a grand adventure. He made friends easily and kept them for life. He loved to travel, taking immense pleasure in introducing his wife and daughter to the beauty and wonder of the world.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Stuart is survived by his beloved sister Joan M. Schopp and her husband David of Bluffton, SC. He is also survived by his much-loved in-laws Barbara Ann and Lewis Nagy of Medford, NJ and their children: Sandi Nagy Sinclair, her husband Sean, and their children Zach and Ashley of Vienna, VA; and Daniel Nagy, his wife Jennifer, and their son Jack of Medford, NJ. He will be deeply missed by his enormous extended family of in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Stuart is predeceased by his brother Rick Kimble of Boulder, CO; and his first wife Sandra (Richards) Kimble of Burlington, NJ.

A celebration of Stuart’s life will be planned at a later date. To honor his life, memorial donations may be made to: Camp Sunshine for Children with Cancer, 1850 Clairmont Road, Decatur, GA 30033; Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, 19 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC, 29910; or Northwest Presbyterian Church, 4300 Northside Drive, Atlanta, GA 30327. The Kimble family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to their heroes in this difficult time—the ICU nurses and medical staff at Coastal Carolina Hospital.
