Gordon Elmer Messler, 96, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro, SC.
He was born in Delaware, NJ on August 07, 1917 to the late Elmer George and Bessie Henry Messler.
He was employed as a painting contractor at the Frankford Arsenal, a U.S. Army Ammunition plant, in the neighborhood of northeast Philadelphia, PA and had his own paint contracting business. As a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, he participated in the liberation of the Phillippines. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Savannah, GA and Gillisonville Baptist Church in Gillisonville, SC.
He is survived by his son, Robert S. Messler of Stroudsburg, PA; his daughter, Deanna Werkheiser, also of Stroudsburg, PA; his brother, Bill Messler of East Stroudsburg, PA; one sister, Betty Sabatino of Oceanside, CA; five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a niece, Beverly (Thomas) Cook of Hampton County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Roma Messler.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 07, 2013 at Sauls Funeral Home Chapel in Ridgeland, SC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until the hour of service at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at 1:00 pm on Thursday, October 10th at Rowland-Myers Funeral Home in Philadelphia, PA and the graveside service with military honors will be in Oakland Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA at 2:00 pm, Thursday, October 10, 2013.
