Harold E. Harriman, age 98, of Bluffton, SC and formerly of Washington, DC died Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at his home.
Mr. Harriman was born on August 21, 1918 in Moriah, NY, the son of the late George Edgar Harriman and ReVella (Miner) Harriman. He attended Syracuse University prior to being drafted into the United States Army-Air Corps. During his military tenure he worked in communications at Washington National Airport where he met his wife, Geneva. He recalled a memorable time of his service when 3 Generals approached him to code a message to then President Eisenhower to give permission to invade Normandy. Following his honorable discharge and while working he completed his degree at Strayer University by taking night classes. He began his career as a civilian working with the Department of the Navy, later working with The National Archives in Washington, DC, and ultimately with the Washington Department of Transportation where he retired. Following his retirement from the Washington DOT, he began an import/export business, International Facilitations. He was a member of Anacostia Lodge No. 21, F.&A.M.’s, The Scottish Rite Consistory, and the Almas Shrine Temple. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Hilton Head, SC. He enjoyed playing the saxophone and wearing bowties. Mr. Harriman was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Geneva “Neva” L. Harriman. He is survived by his daughter, Janice L. Crowell, his Son-In-Law Raymond J. Crowell and his brother, Edward Harriman. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 7th, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Hilton Head Island, 100 South Forest Beach Drive, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928.
