Helen (Mickey) Hall Cheeseman died February 4, 2015 after a long illness at her home in Bluffton, SC. Known as Mickey to all her friends, she was a retired teacher. She was born on March 5, 1943 in Salem, NJ, the daughter of Richard Gervas and Helen Gayner Hall. Raised in Salem and later on the banks of the Delaware River, she was quite a free spirit from water skiing to drag racing.
She graduated from Goldy Beacon College of Business in Wilmington, DE and began her first career as an executive secretary. After her marriage to Robert H. Cheeseman on May 14, 1966, they immediately moved to Guam where she worked for the US Navy in several capacities. She was extremely proud of her volunteer work hosting wounded Marines to beach parties on the weekends.
Upon her return to the mainland, she decided to go back to college to become a teacher. While Bob worked on his Master's she earned her BA in Elementary Education from Glassboro State College in 1974. School year 1972-73 they taught school in the town of Bonao, Dominican Republic. Mickey and Bob moved to Mississippi in the summer of 1975. While Bob worked on his doctoral degree at the University of Southern Mississippi, Mickey began her long career in teaching. They settled down and for 27 years she taught elementary school, adult education, and ABE-GED programs. She spent most of her teaching career in the Clinton School District, West Point School District, and the Madison County School District. While along the way picking up a Master's degree in Adult Education and Elementary Education. She also did post-graduate work at both the University of Mississippi and Southern Mississippi University.
Mickey and Bob retired on June 30, 2002 to the small town of Ocean Springs, MS. They settled down in the Low Country by moving to Sun City Hilton Head on March 1, 2004.
A memorial inurnment service will be conducted on Saturday, March 21 at 10 am at the Howie Memorial Bell Tower Columbarium on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.
