Helen Mihavich Retzer

Helen Retzer of Moss Creek, Hilton Head, SC died Tuesday, January 13, 2009 after a short illness. She was 87 years old. Born Helen Mihavich on February 6, 1921 in Brackenridge, PA, she was the daughter of Michael and Mary Mihavich. She was preceded in death by her four sisters and her husband of 61 years, Henry Retzer, who died November 25, 2008. Helen lived until 1986 in New Kensington, PA where she was active in many community organizations. She owned and operated Van Scrivers Wallpaper & Paint in Tarentum, PA for 20 years and was well known for her generous spirit in keeping her store a friendly and warm place for anyone who entered. Based on her business success, in 1986 she and husband Hank retired to Moss Creek. She served as president of the alter society at St. Andrews Catholic Church and was a current member of St. Francis by the Sea. She volunteered her time at Volunteers in Medicine, loved to bowl, and was a star on the dance floor. She is survived by her two beloved children, daughter, Rise Justice, of Westminister, CO and son, Aaron Retzer, of Moss Creek and his wife Debbie. Helen was a loving and devoted grandmother of four, Troy and Casey Retzer of Clemson, SC, Adam Ruberg of Denver, CO and Lauren Ruberg-Burgoyne and her husband, Nicholas also of Denver. Her incredible baking skills and peanut butter balls will be missed by all, especially her grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in her honor at St. Francis by the Sea on Friday, January 16, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. A reception will be held immediately following at the home of Aaron and Debbie Retzer, 18 Saw Timber Drive, Moss Creek. Donations may be made to Hospice Care of America, 460 William Hilton Pkwy., Suite F, Hilton Head, SC 29929-2497, in lieu of flowers. Sauls Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
