Helene Elizabeth Schmauch Schaeffer

Helene Elizabeth Schmauch Schaeffer, 94, of Sun City Hilton Head died peacefully in her sleep at home on December 18, 2009. She was born on November 2, 1915 in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania, to William G. and Sarah Ann Berry Schmauch. She had an elder sister, Ethel M. and a younger brother, William.She graduated with highest honors from Tamaqua High School in 1933, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with highest honors from Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, in 1937. During her professional career she taught English, mathematics and French in Manor, Pennsylvania, at Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and at the Rolling Road School in Baltimore, Maryland. She pursued graduate studies at Penn State University, Lehigh University and Loyola College in Baltimore.Helene was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, the Rev. Dr. Henry A. W. Schaeffer and her son-in-law, F. Willis DeWane. She is survived by her three daughters, Sarah Ann Morse (Alfred), E. Kathryn DeWane and Helene Elizabeth Derrenberger (Donald). She has four granddaughters, Elizabeth Jane Rhodes, Sarah Kathryn Flagg, Ellen Margaret Morse and Emily Anne Derrenberger. She is blessed with two great grandchildren, Megan Ellen Flagg and Scott Henry Flagg. She is also survived by five cousins, two nieces, Jean Schmauch Jones and Gail Schmauch Davis, and a nephew, James D. Moyer.Helene was a life long member of the United Church of Christ and with her husband served five charges. She currently is an associate member of the St. Luke
