Henry Burton Brown, 66 of Bluffton, South Carolina passed away Friday, September 15, 2023, at St. Josephs Hospital in Savannah, Georgia. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton.
Burt was born on March 28, 1957, in Berea, Kentucky, to parents Henry S. and Wilda Brown and afterwards moved to Raleigh, NC. He formed deep and abiding friendships growing up alongside a large and tight-knit group of neighborhood kids. Harboring a lifelong affinity for sports, sportsmanship and competition, Burt ran track and played both football and baseball throughout junior and high school and eventually trained along with a select group to represent Broughton High School in the decathlon at the statewide AAU Track and Field Competition. Outside of sports he loved working on cars from the time he was able to drive and carried a love for classic cars for the rest of his life. He graduated from Broughton High School in Raleigh in 1975. Following high school, he attended Western Carolina University.
Burt married Kathryn Carney Brown in 1980. They had three children, Joshua Michael Brown, Alexander Marshall Brown and AnneMarie Carney Brown. They lived for a time in Raleigh and later moved to Greensboro, NC in 1990. In 2019, Burt and Kathryn moved to the Savannah area.
Burt had a 36 year career in Environmental Compliance and Consulting. After starting out with AquaTerra and Shield Environmental he helped establish the environmental division of Geological Resources, Inc. Most recently he held the position of Air Quality and Environmental Compliance Officer for Kinder Morgan at the Elba Island LNG Terminal in Savannah.
Burt loved the thrill of cycling in various forms throughout his life and the creativity and craftsmanship found in woodworking. He most loved gathering with family and friends at the Brown family farm in North Cove, NC.
Burt was a man of God. He was raised Methodist and later converted to Catholicism, he served his church community as an usher, as a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and as a frequent Cursillo team member and Ultrea Co-Director in the Charlotte Diocese. He was also a supporter of various organizations focused on populations with special needs including PEP, Programs for Exceptional People.
Burt was preceded in death by his parents Henry S and Wilda Brown of North Cove. Left behind to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 43 years Kathryn Brown, his son Joshua Brown and his wife Jeannine Brown, his son Alexander Brown and his daughter AnneMarie Brown.
A viewing will be held at Sauls Funeral Home of Bluffton on Tuesday, September 26 from 5:00-7:00pm with a prayer service at 6:30pm. The funeral mass will take place at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Bluffton, SC on Wednesday, September 27 at 10:30am with an open viewing at 10:00am.
