Hiroko "Koko" Moreno, born on August 14, 1943, in Hiroshima, Japan, passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024, in Jacksonville, Florida. She was 81 years old.
Koko grew up on the islands of Okinawa and Ishigaki, Japan. She had a challenging childhood, growing up in post-war Japan. At just 18 years old, she courageously moved to the United States. Despite facing significant hardships, including being left to raise two children alone while navigating a new country and language, Koko persevered through sheer force of will and stubbornness. Her life took a joyful turn when she met Jaime Moreno, the love of her life. Together, they built a remarkable life and partnership that stretched for 48 blissful years.
Koko and Jaime owned and operated two successful hair salons in Northern Virginia, where she built a loyal clientele and formed cherished lifelong friendships. After many fulfilling years in business, Koko (reluctantly) retired and moved with Jaime to Bluffton, South Carolina, where they made their home the past ten years.
Koko had an extraordinary ability to bring joy to everyone she encountered. She found immense happiness in caring for others—whether it was through her skilled hands as a hairstylist, preparing delicious meals for loved ones, or offering her time and attention to anyone in need. Her warmth and generosity left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
She had an adventurous spirit and a love for travel. She learned to ski at 40 and (almost) learned to scuba dive even later in life. Sometimes this led to perilous situations (many a ski patrol have interacted with Koko over the years), but that never dampened her love for new experiences. She loved her dogs, her family, her friends, god, and Costco.
She is survived by her devoted husband Jaime; her children Shannon Hill, Susan "Sachiko" Hill, and Eric Moreno; her daughter-in-law Laura Moreno; and her grandchildren Lucy, Lilly, David and Daniel. The family takes comfort in knowing that Koko did not endure a prolonged decline and remained true to her selfless nature until the end. She was especially happy in her final days after spending extended time doting on her beloved granddaughters Lucy and Lilly.
Koko’s memory will forever be a source of love and inspiration for those who were fortunate enough to know her.
The family will greet friends from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd., Bluffton, SC. A Funeral Service will begin at 3:00 pm. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
