Howard Laurence Ackerman, 83, passed away peacefully at his home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, on March 20, 2026.
Howard was born on February 15, 1943, in the Bronx, New York, to Charles and Hortense Ackerman. He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 61 years, Joan Prince Ackerman; his children, Michael Ackerman and Nancy DiPaolo; his son-in-law, James DiPaolo; and his cherished grandchildren, Kevin Ackerman, Jason DiPaolo, and Alex DiPaolo. He is also lovingly remembered by his nieces, nephews, and countless friends who felt more like family.
Howard—known to many as Howie—was a remarkable individual whose independence, character, and conviction defined his life. He charted his own course with confidence, whether captaining his own boat, piloting his own plane, or simply living life according to his principles. He possessed a strong sense of reason and consistency that others admired and trusted. Howard was respected for his wisdom, integrity, and generous spirit, and he made a lasting impact on the lives of all who knew him.
A successful businessman and entrepreneur, Howard built a distinguished career in the publishing industry and beyond. After retirement, he served as a member of the Port Royal Board of Directors and was frequently sought out for guidance, advice, and mentorship. He took great pride in supporting others both personally and professionally.
Highly accomplished in all he pursued, Howard balanced professional success with an enduring love of adventure. A passionate boating enthusiast, he found joy on the water—whether cruising aboard Jersey Boys, sailing Island Girl, enjoying time on friends’ boats, or vacationing with family and friends. He also loved golfing with those he cared about most.
Aviation was another lifelong passion. Howard was dedicated to flying for much of his adult life and piloted a variety of aircraft. He proudly served with the Air National Guard, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of the Beaufort County Airport Board and devoted many hours to Angel Flight missions, transporting individuals in need of medical treatment. A proud member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) for over 50 years, Howard’s love of flying opened the door to new adventures, meaningful service, and lifelong friendships.
Above all, Howard was an adventurous spirit and devoted family man. He loved exploring the world, taking his family sailing, skiing, and traveling far and wide—creating treasured memories that will be carried forward for generations.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to mskcc.org (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center) or AngelFlightEast.org
