January 1, 1934 — May 20, 2025

Bluffton

Hugh “Mike” Munro Lovejoy, Sr. passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on May 20, 2025. His 91 years were filled with many years of joy and large family.

Born on New Year’s Day 1934 to Olivina “Olive” Catherine Lyon and John M. Lovejoy in Medford, Massachusetts. He was the eldest of four siblings, John “Toni” Moulton Lovejoy, Jr., Lynn Marceau Hallowell (John) and Samuel Holden Lovejoy. He proudly served in the Marine Corps from 1957-1960 and achieved the rank of Captain before earning his Honorable Discharge.

Mike then went on to receive an MBA at the University of South Carolina and was a devoted Gamecock fan for life. It was in South Carolina that he met and married Mary Jane Mixson, having four children, Hugh “Skip” M. Lovejoy, Jr. (Joyce), Benjamin M. Lovejoy (Kelly), Mims Lovejoy Taylor (Kent), and Mary “Boo” L. Weldon (Ken). Mike worked for many years in the textile industry, and his career brought him to New York City, where he met and married Ellen Jill Halton, with whom he spent 53 happy years and had Elizabeth “Liz” K. Devlin (John).

Mike is survived by his 11 grandchildren, Lauren Day, John Lovejoy, Michael Lovejoy, Cameron Lovejoy, Duncan Lovejoy, Patrick Taylor (Cecilia), Nicholas Taylor (Chelsea), Mattie Zanin (Tradd), Mims Weldon, Kendall Devlin, and Jack Devlin. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Clara Margaret Day, Elizabeth “Emmy” Day, and Lily Lovejoy Taylor. Mike was predeceased by his former wife, Mary M. Harper; his brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Nancy Lovejoy; and his son-in-law, Kent W. Taylor.

Mike was a strong, quiet (in comparison to his family), loving husband and father who instilled the importance of family in all of us. He loved history (especially the Civil War period), was an avid sports fan and golfer, and loved to read. He is missed dearly by all who knew him and are lucky to have been loved by him for so many years. A service officiated by The Very Reverend A. Kenneth Weldon, with military honors will be held at Beaufort National Cemetery on June 13th at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758516 Topeka, KS 66675.
