Irene Elizabeth Papka, 86, of Bluffton, SC, passed away peacefully on the morning of November 7, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. Irene was the beloved wife of the late Matthew Papka, with whom she shared a deeply loving, and inspiring marriage. Their bond was a cornerstone of their family, and their love will forever be remembered by all who knew them.
Born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Irene attended Marymount High School, where she was known for her infectious spirit, serving as a cheerleader, where she cheered on her future husband, and she also won the title of Snowball Queen at her high school ball. Her zest for life and warmth touched everyone she met. Irene worked at the Bell telephone Co. in her early years then for the Luzerne County Courthouse, as recorder of deeds. After retiring, Matthew and Irene moved to South Carolina to be closer to their children.
Irene had a deep love for food and family, often gathering her loved ones around the table to enjoy meals she lovingly prepared. She’ll be most remembered for her lasagna, garlic log and blueberry cheesecake recipes that were passed down through generations, keeping her spirit alive in every bite.
Irene was a proud mother and survived by her three children: Lori Ann Pezak, Matthew J. Papka Jr., and Tricia A. Michael. Lori with her husband, Joseph, reside in St. Augustine, FL. Matthew resides in Hilton Head, SC. and Tricia with her husband, Chad, reside in Bluffton, SC.
Irene was also a devoted grandmother to Justin Ryncavage (Kristal), Tyler Pezak (Ranae), Dylan Pezak (Delanie), Taylor Michael, Camryn Michael, and Nicholas Papka.
Irene also leaves behind five cherished great-grandchildren: Jaxon and Aurora Ryncavage, Cecilia, Rex, and Rocky Pezak, all of whom brought immense joy to her life. Irene is also survived by two beloved and wonderful sisters, Frances Malin, Va. and Theresa Wielga, Va.and many loved nieces and nephews.
Irene is preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Matthew “Matty” Papka, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Zawila and her brothers Joe and Teddy.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Bluffton, SC with inurnment to follow in Resurrection Garden.
