James Walter Dick, of Beaufort, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born on May 11, 1936, in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, James lived a life defined by hard work, service, and devotion to his family. He proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Army, stationed at Kagnew Station in Eritrea, Africa, where he worked as a radio communications operator.

Following his military service, James returned to Pennsylvania, where he ran Dick Construction Company in Hazleton and operated an anthracite mining operation. After retiring and relocating to the South Carolina Lowcountry in the 1980s, he continued working in various local retail businesses in the Bluffton area, enjoying the opportunity to stay active and connect with members of the community.

He was known for his quick wit, sarcastic sense of humor, and the steady presence he brought to the lives of his family and friends. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

James is survived by his wife, Karen Dick; his daughter, Jayme Bowman and her husband, John; his stepsons, Philip Backlund and his wife, Kate, and Kurt Backlund and his wife, Karen; and his cherished grandchildren, Jenni Bowman, Brooke Bowman, and Tyler Backlund.
