James M. “Jay” Bacon, 87, passed away on October 22, 2016 in Bluffton, South Carolina, where he and his wife of 65 years, Barbara, have lived since 2005. He was born August 1, 1929 in Bridgeton, New Jersey to Maurice and Frances Henderson Bacon. He graduated from Rutgers University where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Jay served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon discharge he joined Owens-Illinois in Toledo, Ohio, as a computer systems analyst. He worked there until his retirement in 1984. Jay enjoyed bowling, gardening and playing golf. He had his first hole-in-one at the age of 86. Jay remained very active in his later years. He volunteered at the Coastal Carolina Hospital accumulating 1000 hours of service, participated in the Beaufort-Jasper County Senior Games, played the ukulele, and was a member of the Sun City Veterans Association, bocce club and the Okatie Farmers group. Jay is survived by his wife, Barbara Elmer Bacon his daughters Kathy King (Dana), Beth Bacon-Pituch (Keenan), and Carol Bacon, as well as grandchildren Karen, Steven, Joseph and Alexis and great-grandson Sam. A graveside service is planned for 11 am Monday, October 31st at Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, South Carolina.
