James "Jim" Lee Riche

Jim Riche was a man with a genuinely big heart, an infectious smile, and an absolute devotion to his family. Above all, Jim loved the beautiful life he built with his beloved wife of 58 years, Joyce. Together, they shared an unbreakable bond and a love for adventure, traveling to explore the beaches of Hawaii, the vibrant culture of Mexico, and the sun-soaked islands of the Caribbean, leaving behind a legacy defined by joy, service, and an enduring love.

James Lee Riche, 78, of Ridgeland, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026. Jim was born on June 25, 1947, in Indianapolis, Ind., to the late Dorothy Mae (Vaughn) Riche and Raymond Earl Riche. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce Ann Riche of Ridgeland; his loving daughter, Jessica (Pat) Murphy of Bluffton; his cherished granddaughter, Chloe Murphy; his sister, Mary Ann (Mike) Richards of Walton, Ind.; his sister-in-law, Phyllis Riche of Columbus, Ind.; special niece Beverly (Richard) Stanley of Edinburgh, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, David Riche and William Riche.

To know Jim was to be teased by him. He possessed a sharp wit and loved nothing more than joking around, pulling a good prank, and sharing a laugh over a bourbon and water. He was a man of diverse interests; he loved history, was always up for a lively political conversation, and enjoyed passing the time playing chess or listening to music. He also had a great appreciation for simple pleasures—never turning down a hamburger or a fresh doughnut.

Family was always at the center of Jim's life. He took immense pride in the accomplishments of his daughter, Jessica, and found endless joy in being Grandpa to his granddaughter, Chloe. Whether offering guidance, sharing stories, or simply spending time together, Jim's love was steady, unwavering, and deeply felt. He celebrated life's milestones with enthusiasm and faced its challenges with quiet strength, always putting the needs of those he loved before his own. His family will forever cherish the countless memories, lessons, laughter, and unconditional love he shared throughout his life.

Yet, above all the laughter and playful noise, there lived a profound and quiet humility. He earned an Associate degree in Business Administration from the National College of Business, completing much of his education through night classes at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

A proud and decorated veteran, Jim served on active duty in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969, and in the U.S. Army Reserves until 1973. During his service in the Vietnam War with the 1st Cavalry Division, he was awarded a Purple Heart, The Air Medal, and The Bronze Star for his bravery and heroic actions in combat.

Following his military service, Jim built a successful 34-year career as a computer programmer for Lucent Technologies. His work took him and his family on many adventures, moving from Indianapolis to Shreveport, Louisiana, and later to York, Pennsylvania. Upon retiring, Jim relocated to Deltona, Florida, where his passion for technology kept him working in the Volusia County IT department for another 13 years. Jim later relocated to Bluffton, SC to be closer to his daughter and granddaughter.

Jim’s sharp wit and unmistakable smile will forever be etched in our memories. He leaves behind a legacy of service to his country, deep devotion to his family, and a reminder to always face the world with a smile.

Services honoring Jim’s life and military sacrifice will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026. A military burial will take place at 10 a.m. at Beaufort National Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to Sauls Funeral Home for a visitation starting at 12 p.m., immediately followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m.
