James P. Koerber, 84, of St. Helena Island, SC died Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, SC. Mr. Koerber was born on May 1, 1933 in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late Charles and Theresa Koerber. In 1955 he received his BA Degree, Magna Cum Laude and in 1959 he received his Master’s Degree in Theology both from St. Mary’s University in Baltimore, MD. In 1986 he received his MPA from the University of South Carolina. From 1959-1970 he worked as a Chaplain at the University of Maryland Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Hospitals in Baltimore, MD. During that time he was also a parish priest, lecturer, counselor, and high school teacher. From 1971-1991 he was a Deputy Director with the U.S. Department of Labor, and from 1993-1995 he was a Mental Health Counselor III with the Columbia Area Mental Health Center and the Coastal Empire Community Mental Health Center. Mr. Koerber was also a member of MENSA. Mr. Koerber was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Koerber. He is survived by his wife Marilyn Koerber; and sister-in-law, Lorraine (Daryel) Farmer. The family requests memorials be made to Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Beaufort, Penn Center of St. Helena Island, or Alzheimers Family Services of Greater Beaufort.
