James Melvin Scott

September 28, 1943 — September 10, 2023

James Melvin Scott (Scotty) passed away September 10th .…born 1943 in Greenwood, SC to Ben Julian Scott and Edythe Wind Scott Bach. He is survived by his wife, Cathy Blair Scott, children: Kathleen Christine Phillips and James Edward Scott, grandchildren Kathleen Cook and Andie Cook and four siblings: Peg Scott; Chris (Nancy) Bach; Bruce Bach (Lisa); Dana (Bill) Wagner; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his grandson Carver Mason Scott.

Known for his life on the water- sailing the Caribbean with his buddy Jon Casanova when he was not lending his masterful hand to wood refinishing on the boats they built; life and travel s on a houseboat named “Island” with his wife Cathy;  and forever fishing, he lived his life like a song. A lowcountry resident since the 70’s who took full advantage of enjoying the great outdoors fishing, shrimping , crabbing, gardening and bird watching. He will be remembered as “the Captain and The Kid” for sharing his knowledge of  how to respect the waters along with fishing and shrimping , and stressed the belief that “If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day but if you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime.”

After retirement from owning and operating Coastal Home & Villa Rentals in Hilton Head with his partner and wife Cathy, they settled into winters in the Florida Keys and the rest of the year enjoying the solitude at his quiet homeplace, in the “country” which he referred to as “his paradise” with his Springer Spaniels by his side. Scott was happiest on the water catching his dinner or in the garden growing his flowers and vegetable and at day’s end he was a ferocious reader with an incredible historical memory.  His parting words to Cathy would be…”if the phone doesn’t ring-it’s me.” Now he and his buddy Jon are reunited singing “boat drinks!”

At present no services are planned . In lieu of flowers, donations made to his favorite charity of Tunnels to Towers or Hospice Care of the Lowcountry or a charity of your choice.
