James W. Niemeyer, age 70, of Bluffton, SC and formerly of Spring Hill, FL died Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the Medical University of South Carolina. Mr. Niemeyer was born on May 8, 1946 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late James Walter Niemeyer and Helen A. Riley Niemeyer. He served with the New York City Police Department, retired as a Second Grade Detective. During his time with the NYPD, he worked with the Special Fraud Squad and was deputized as a Marshal to work with the FBI over state lines. For this service, he received a commendation from the FBI. Outside of work James was an avid reader, particularly history, geography, and Tom Clancy novels. He also enjoyed traveling, camping, hiking, was known for his humor, and had a love for animals and was especially faithful to keeping his birdfeeders amply supplied. Mr. Niemeyer was preceded in death by his brother, John J. Niemeyer. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Margaret “Peggy” Niemeyer; son, Sgt. Matt J. Niemeyer, NYPD (Nicole) of Staten Island, NY; sister, Rita Niemeyer of Bluffton, SC; grandsons, Kieran and Riley Niemeyer; sister-in-law, Grace Niemeyer of Brooklyn, NY; niece, Kristi Niemeyer Graff (Keith) of North Bellmore, Long Island, NY; grandniece, Penelope “Penny” Graff; and a host of cousins, many of which live in Sun City-Hilton Head, SC. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at St. Andrews Chapel, 220 Pinckney Colony Road, Bluffton, SC 29910. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the National Autism Association.
