James Francis Quigley

James F. Quigley, 84, passed away Nov. 22, 2021 at Harbor Cove Memory Care, Hilton Head Island, S.C. after a month long stay.

James was born New Year’s Day 1937 to the late William and Mary (Errington) Quigley in Phillipsburg, N.J.

Known for his warmth and Irish wit, James leaves a profound hole in the hearts of all who loved him.

James spent the majority of his career at the former Hess’s Department Store (which became the Bon-Ton at the end of his career), Allentown, Pa., beginning in 1963 and retiring as vice-president in 1996.

He started as a salesman in Hess’s major appliances department in 1963 and was then a buyer of boy’s furnishings and men’s furnishings before moving to the controller’s office. In 1968 he became merchandise controller and later store controller and assistant vice-president. He retired as Vice-President of Traffic and Merchandise Distribution.

He was previously employed as a technical writer at Air Products and Chemicals, Allentown, and at the former Phillipsburg location of Ingersoll-Rand.

James was a 1955 graduate of the former St. Philip and St. James High School (later Phillipsburg Catholic High School), Phillipsburg, and attended Lafayette College, Easton, Pa. and Muhlenberg College, Allentown.

James is survived by his wife Anne of Hilton Head Island; daughter Tami Quigley of Allentown; former wife Jacqueline Quigley of Allentown; and three step-nieces. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Bill and Devin.

James was a former resident of Bluffton, S.C., where he and his wife moved in 1998; and Allentown. He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Bluffton, and a former member of SS. Philip and James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg; the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena, Allentown; and St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Orefield, Pa.

A devout Catholic, James was also an avid fan of the University of Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish and New York Giants football teams as well as the former Brooklyn Dodgers. He also loved spending time with Pebbles, their sweet Chihuahua-mix.

The family wishes to thank K’Lee Latham, executive director of Harbor Cove, and the staff for their kindness, care and compassion.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, December 14, 2021 at St. Andrews Chapel, Pinckney Colony Road, Bluffton with burial to follow in Resurrection Garden, 31 St. Gregory Drive, Bluffton.  Sauls Funeral Home, Bluffton, is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be scheduled at Rosemont Lutheran Church, Bethlehem, Pa.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Gregory the Great or the Alzheimer’s Association.
