James Bruce Saxon

James Bruce Saxon Sr, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at NHC Healthcare in Bluffton, SC. Born to the late Daniel A. and Effie Woods Saxon on October 6, 1924, he lived most of his life in Ridgeland, SC.He was predeceased by his wife Susie Lowther Saxon; sons J. Bruce Saxon Jr. and an infant son; brothers Willard J. Saxon, Ryan Saxon, and Dan Saxon; and sisters Clyde Godfrey Nillson, Vivan S. Lowther, and Marjorie S. Porter. Bruce was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who left behind many wonderful memories for his family to enjoy. He was a builder for most of his life and was among some of the first to build homes in Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island. He and his wife Susie often took the ferry to the island before the first bridge was built and enjoyed many hours walking the beach and collecting shells, a pleasure they enjoyed into their golden years. He was a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as Branch President in the church for many years. He served his country as a Merchant Marine during WWII and made multiple Atlantic crossings to the North Sea and the Mediterranean in convoys delivering supplies to the troops. He loved gardening and always had beautiful roses in bloom.Survivors include son Daniel A. Saxon (Theresa) of Hilton Head, SC and daughters Susan E. Saxon (Jacob Preston) of Bluffton, SC and Faye S. Catterton (Rodney) of Ridgeland, SC. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and multiple great grandchildren. The family extends special thanks to NHC and to Tidewater Hospice for their loving care and support. Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at the Ridgeland Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with burial in the Ridgeland cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 am until the hour of the service at the church.
