Jan Mcgough Spears

Jan McGough Spears, 73, passed away on July 24, 2021 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, surrounded by her family. Jan was born to the late Jane and William McGough on December 13, 1947, in Birmingham, AL. She graduated from the University of Alabama with a graduate degree in education and taught adult vocational school for many years. Jan married George Spears in 1977.  They lived in Birmingham, AL for 15 years before moving to Hilton Head in 1993.  They moved to Palmetto Bluff in 2006 as two of the very first residents. Together, they enjoyed traveling and especially many happy visits to the Caribbean. They shared a love of good food and wine and peaceful times looking out at the May River.

Jan was active in many charities, including the Boys and Girls Club and Habitat for Humanity, and she was a founding member of the Women of Palmetto Bluff. She loved entertaining, spending time with her many good friends, and taking long walks with her dogs.

Jan is survived by her husband, her daughter, Jennifer Bashford, her son, Michael Spears, and her grandchildren, Blair and Porter Spears.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Memory Matters of Hilton Head at 117 Wm. Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926. Plans for a memorial service will be shared at a future date.
