Janice Louise Herr, 78, passed away on July 11th, 2026 at MUSC in Charleston, SC surrounded by her family. Janice was born unexpectedly at home and delivered by her father, on September 10th, 1947 in Point Pleasant, WV surprising everyone. Thus began her life of adventure! She grew up in St. Albans, WV with her five siblings. She attended Catholic schools, and graduated from Charleston Catholic High School, where she was homecoming queen. Janice attended St. Xavier College in Chicago, before transferring and earning her degree from the University of Illinois in 1969. She maintained lifelong friendships she made during her college years. They reunited for a 60th birthday, which initiated the “60’s tour”. Lots of travel, adventures, and laughter with her “friends that were like family”. She was a long time resident of Chicago, and worked as a paralegal specializing in estates and trusts, and worked for several banks as a trust officer. Always a “city mouse”, she embraced the city life. She immersed herself in the arts, and enjoyed going to exhibits-especially the Art Institute, museums, good restaurants, and the theatre. She also found pleasure in being outdoors, strolling botanical gardens, birding, and just enjoying the beauty of nature. After many harsh Chicagowinters, she moved back to the Lowcountry, where she enjoyed her home and yard in Moss Creek. She volunteered for, and supported, several local organizations and charities in Bluffton. She loved the Lowcountry of SC, and especially walks on Pinckney Island, and enjoying the May River. Janice had a great sense of humor, sharp mind, and was very creative. She was an avid reader, and loved crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Aunt Janice was generous with her nieces and nephews on their birthdays and Christmas.
Janice is survived by her sister Elizabeth Herr (Ralph Szur), brother Michael Hoer (Diane Booth), sister Jane Tennant (Steve), and brother Dr. James Hoer (Nancy), and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cherished friends Ann & Joe Kerns, Karen Dombrowski, and DonnaSmith. She also leaves behind her furry friend Greta, a sweet rescue dog that won her heart. She was predeceased by herparents Robert and Betty Hoer, and her sister Elise Barry.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to her doctors, nurses, therapists, and the support staff at MUSC for their compassionate and kind care. A celebration of Janice’s life will be held at a future date to be announced. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know her.
