Jason S. Schloss

June 15, 1936 — March 16, 2022

Jason S. Schloss,

Telecoms Pioneer and Longtime Sun City Resident

Jason S. Schloss, 85, of Sun City Hilton Head passed away early Wednesday morning, March 16, 2022. A caring husband, father, and grandfather, his heart was always full of love for his family and friends. He is survived by his three adult sons: Peter, David, and Jonathan; daughter-in-laws, Lili and Julie; and six grandchildren: Philip, Zach, Ben, Alex, Ethan, and Eliza. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Ruth, his parents, Philip and Gertrude, and his sister Fay.

Born on June 15, 1936, in Hartford, Connecticut, Jason received his undergraduate degree from Babson College in Boston, Massachusetts in 1959. A resident of Sun City since June 2005, he served for many years on the board of directors of Sun City’s various residents associations – and as chair of its NRC for many years.

Jason was a pioneer in the United States telecommunication industry. Taking advantage of a 1968 ruling by the Federal Communications Commission in what became known as the “Carterfone Case,” he became one of the early suppliers of non-Bell telecommunications equipment to consumers throughout the United States. Sourcing equipment from Asia, Jason built several successful telecommunications businesses and traveled extensively in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China during a 40-year period beginning in the late 1960s. As a recent college graduate and just starting his telecommunications career, he helped facilitate “live” communications for both the Nixon and Kennedy 1960 Presidential campaigns.

An accomplished jazz clarinetist-saxophonist, Jason led the big band / jazz ensemble, “the Starlighters” during the 1950s. Nurturing his love for music, he was a regular attendee of jazz performances in Savannah and the Hilton Head area. A passionate Boston Red Sox fan, Jason watched almost every Red Sox regular season game and especially enjoyed visiting Red Sox Spring Training with his grandchildren or friends from Sun City. An avid golfer, he played regularly at Hidden Cyprus and Okatie Creek, as well as serving as a volunteer marshal at Hilton Head’s RBC Heritage Tournament. Also an avid dog lover, he was very active with the Sun City Dog Park during his early years living in Sun City. He is preceded in death by his dog Willow and survived by his dog, Biscuit.
