Bluffton - After a long illness, Jeanne Ashley Jones of Bluffton, SC, passed into eternal rest peacefully at her home on Myrtle Island in Bluffton, Saturday, May 23, 2015. Jeanne, born and raised in Walterboro, SC was the daughter of Mr. Jerome Campbell Ashley and Dorothy Padgett Ashley.
Jeanne studied at Queens College, Charlotte, NC and graduated from The University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC with a Sociology degree. After graduation, she lived in Charleston, SC, where she was employed by The Department of Public Welfare as a social worker and later as an elementary school teacher in North Charleston.
While in Charleston, she married Dr. Robert Sidney Jones, a naval officer at the time. They later had two children, Nancy Ashley and Robert Sidney, Jr.
Jeanne faithfully supported her husband both through his military career as an officer in the United States Navy and as a surgeon in private practice in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. She was an immense support to her family and was an incredible mother and wife.
Inherited from her father, she had a lifelong passion and reverence for history, especially that of her beloved native state of South Carolina. Jeanne was an amazing and very loving mother who spent much quality time with her children and grandson, Cooper. With them, she enjoyed the simple trappings of life such as an afternoon crabbing in the picturesque inlets of Edisto Beach to exploring historical sites from New Orleans to Canada and throughout Southeast Asia. Always the quintessential proper Southern lady, her children's friends knew there was always an open door for them at the Jones residence and there, she was always a gracious hostess. Having had a horticulturist and champion camellia grower for a father, she had a passion for tending to her camellias, some of which she moved from house to house.
In Bluffton, she loved volunteering at the Heyward House Historic Center as a docent and Calhoun Station, a charitable organization.
While living in Charleston, Jeanne was a member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and was currently a member of the Church of the Cross, Bluffton.
Jeanne is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 51 years, Dr. Robert Sidney Jones, daughter, Nancy Ashley Jones of Charleston, son, Robert Sidney Jones, Jr. and his wife, Kim of Bluffton and grandson Cooper. Also, she is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Lucy Ashley of John's Island, SC and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Albert and Betty Jones of Signal Mountain, TN.
