Joan Kerr Mayer, 87, went home to be with her Lord, her husband, and her son on March 8, 2016.
Joan was born on August 15, 1928 and raised in Bloomfield NJ, the daughter of Albert and Agnes Kerr. Her life in Bloomfield was filled with happy memories of her many friends and brother; Bobby. Joan loved to tell the stories of growing up with her “girlfriends”, who she stayed in close contact with for her entire life. Joan was a private secretary to the Personnel Manager of the Andrew Jergens Plant in NJ and later became a John Robert Powers model as well as a House and Sample model in New York City.
Joan was a loving and devoted wife and mother, married 40 years to Edward G. Mayer Jr. and raised two sons, Edward III and Peter. Joan and Ed enjoyed their home in Far Hills, NJ and later at the Jersey Shore in Spring Lake. Following retirement, Joan and Ed moved to Palm City, FL and enjoyed their time with friends at the Evergreen Club, playing golf, bridge, and entertaining.
Joan later moved to Hilton Head, meeting another new set of friends at Sun City and Seabrook. Joan enjoyed bridge, reading, and most of all, traveling. Although always the Jersey girl, Joan was particularly fond of her trips to Ireland and France. Joan was predeceased by her husband; her son Edward, and brother Robert. Joan is survived by her son Peter and daughter-in-law Ginny of Greenville, SC; granddaughters, Julia Mayer of Greenville, SC and Kaitlyn Mayer of Greenville, SC; a grandson, Adam; step-granddaughter, Emily Martin; a niece, Betsy Belmonte of Red Bank, NJ and countless friends.
“Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy, and celebration. The hummingbird’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning, and that laughter is life’s sweetest creation.”
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 21, 2016 at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, 45 Beach City Road, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926. Her wishes were to be cremated and interred with Edward G. Mayer Jr. in Palm City, FL.
