John Morton Baumann of Hilton Head, South Carolina died peacefully on Saturday, June 17, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
John was a devoted husband, friend, and partner for almost 65 years to his wife, Mary. Together they raised their family on Long Island before retiring to Hilton Head over 25 years ago.
John was born in East Elmhurst, New York on January 27, 1934, to Walter and Ethel Baumann. Since his older brother rooted for the Yankees, he naturally became an avid and lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.
John served two years in the U.S. Navy on active duty on the submarine USS Penguin (which was his favorite trivia question for his grandchildren). John attended Hofstra University where he played second base (and went to classes). John was a business teacher and Varsity Baseball coach at H. Frank Carey High School in Franklin Square, NY. The baseball teams John coached for almost 20 years were successful on the field, but he was most proud of the many sportsmanship awards his teams earned. John also served the athletic community as a softball and baseball umpire, and college soccer referee. In 2019, John was honored by being inducted into the Nassau County High School Athletics Hall of Fame for his many contributions.
In retirement, John enjoyed traveling, playing golf and tennis, volunteering at St. Francis by the Sea, dressing up as Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny for the Indigo Run Community and, of course, rooting for the Red Sox.
John loved a good laugh and enjoyed telling jokes and had a natural quick wit. John also loved his Dunkin’ Frozen Coffees and (what else) Boston Creme Donuts. Every trip to the dump with a grandchild included a Dunkin’ run and the admonition not to tell Nana.
In addition to his wife Mary, John is survived by his three children: Mary Ann Brewster (Jim) of Bridgeport CT; John Baumann Jr. (Bernadette) of Sarasota, FL; Edward (Ted) Baumann of Huntington, NY. John was blessed with eight grandchildren (most of them Red Sox fans) and five great-grandchildren and many cherished nieces and nephews.
During his last few months, John and his children and grandchildren were blessed to spend precious time together caring for each other. John was a wonderful son,
husband, father, “Pop,” uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
As a player and coach, John proudly wore the number 15. The night he passed, the Sox scored 15 runs (against the Yankees~as sweet as his Dunkin’).
A memorial mass will be held Monday, September 25, at 10:00 at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in his honor to the Parkinson & Movement Disorder Alliance. www.pmdalliance.org/give/
