John Joseph Fitzgerald

John Joseph Fitzgerald, 82 of Bluffton, SC passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011 in the NHC Healthcare Bluffton.He was born in North Adams, MA on October 17, 1928. He was the son of the late John Francis and Frances Kelly Fitzgerald.He was a graduate of Notre Dame University where he received his masters. He received his PHD from Tulane and taught at the University of Massachusetts. He was a Captain in the US Coast Guard and he was retired from the Coast Guard Reserve. He was a member of Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church. He enjoyed golf.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret M. Fitzgerald; four sons, Stephen Joseph (Michelle) Fitzgerald of Swansea, MA, Thomas John (Amy) Fitzgerald of West port, MA, Joseph Leo Fitzgerald of Somerset, MA and Michael John Fitzgerald of Swansea, MA; two daughters, Catherine Ann (David) Rioux of Machias, Maine and Joan Marie (Michael) Fitzgerald of Shelburne, MA and eight grandchildren.The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am, Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 333 Fording Island Road, Bluffton with burial in the Beaufort National Cemetery.The family requests memorial gifts be made to Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 333 Fording Island Rd., Bluffton, SC
