John J. Gorman, Sr. of Eagle’s Pointe, Okatie, SC passed away Tuesday August 10, 2021 following a brief illness. John was the cherished husband of Diane M. (Beaudet) Gorman and father of John J. Gorman, Jr. of Bluffton, SC; Heather Morgan and her husband Maj. Ryan Morgan of Springfield, VA; and step-daughter Heather (Albrecht) Fulkert and husband Spencer Fulkert of Arlington, TX. John was the grandfather lovingly known as “Big T” to John J. Gorman, III (Jack) and Savannah, Griffin and Fiona Morgan. He was the beloved brother of Thomas Gorman of Greenfield, NY; Meg Del Vecchio and her husband Anthony of Mechanicville; Joyce Gorman of Mechanicville; James Gorman of Rotterdam, NY; William Gorman and his wife Cheryl of Stillwater, NY and Christopher Gorman and his wife Ginny of Waterford, NY. John was predeceased by his parents Thomas H. Gorman, Jr and Rosemary (Lenihan) Gorman and brother Michael Gorman who is survived by his wife Alice.
A graduate of SUNY Cobleskill’s Culinary Program, John began his career in food and beverage management at the DeWitt Clinton Hotel in Albany, NY, followed by the Queensbury Hotel in Glens Falls, NY; and the Adirondack Lodge in Lake Placid, NY. He owned two restaurants over the years, the Fairvale Inn in North Granville, NY, and the Copper Kitchen in Bluffton, SC. John was a Food Service Administrator for the NYS Department of Correctional Services for 12 years. John’s “second” career was in law enforcement. He served as a Sergeant for Hilton Head Plantation and Chief of Security for Bray’s Island Plantation. He last worked as a law enforcement instructor at the USMC Recruit Depot at Parris Island and the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, SC.
John attended services at the Church of the Cross, Bluffton, SC. He was a lifetime member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, serving on the Board of Trustees for the Rome, NY lodge, and twice was Exalted Ruler of the Mechanicville, NY lodge. He was an avid golfer and bowler.
The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd., Bluffton until the hour of the memorial service at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Red Cross in memory of John J. Gorman Sr.
