John Howard Grote, Sr.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Howard Grote Sr. who departed this life on August 25, 2025, at the age of 68. 

Born in Brooklyn, NY on May 16, 1957, he grew up in Brooklyn, NY and Sarasota, FL. He attended St. John’s university, where he met his loving wife of 40 years, Jayne. He often described Jayne as his “rock”. Both great orators with similar senses of humor, intelligent and funny, they were the best possible match. Married on September 16, 1984, they raised their two children, John and Katie in Massapequa, NY. 

John started his career as a video editor in 1982 and worked at various organizations: NEP, CIne-Vid, Post Perfect, CC Visual, Moxie Video Productions and Betelgeuse, before finally finding his true home at CBS Productions. He was a beloved colleague to all, and will be long remembered not only for his professional excellence, his innate storytelling ability, but for the lasting impact he had on those fortunate enough to work alongside him. Throughout his distinguished career at CBS, John was more than a valued team member. He was a leader, a guiding light, a source of wisdom and a steady presence. His passion for excellence was contagious, along with his ability to see the potential in others, offering mentorship and advice that often shaped coworkers careers and lives. John had a gift for building genuine connections and often took time to listen, share a kind word and celebrate the successes of his coworkers. 

Outside of work, John was known for his warm, cheerful way that made everyone feel at ease. He had an exceptional gift for storytelling and a sense of humor that never failed to bring laughter, especially through his endless supply of dad jokes. A close-knit family, John was a devoted Dad, who often talked of his children to all who would listen, coached various sports leagues they were involved in, and “occasionally” bragged about their accomplishments. John enjoyed every phase of his children’s lives and especially enjoyed spending time with them as adults, taking many adventurous family trips together. These family vacations hold some of the best memories, filled with his laughter and knack for turning even the simplest moments into a story worth telling. John cherished being a father, and his children will forever hold the titles of “MVP” and “Daddy’s little girl.” John loved taking motorcycle rides with his wife, creating countless miles of memories together. 

At home, he shared a deep love for his dogs and granddogs, who were always by his side. John was a lifelong Yankees fan and loved watching most sports. He played the occasional round of golf and, later in life, took up pickleball, joining several groups where he made great friendships on the court. Music was a joy in his life, especially the Allman Brothers, whose songs brought him comfort and peace during his final months. Whether around the dinner table, on the road, or simply in everyday life, John’s ability to bring joy, warmth, and laughter made him someone truly special- an irreplaceable presence in the lives of those who loved him. 

John was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Marian. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jayne; his children, John Jr. and Katie (husband Doug); his sister, Judy (husband Frankie and daughter Leilani); and his brother, Dan (wife Anita and daughters Judy and Gail). He also leaves behind his cherished dog and granddogs, who brought him joy and companionship every day. 

A celebration of life will be held on August 30 from 12-3pm at Riverbend Lodge. 

John will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered, always.
