The John Thomas Heery Story
John Thomas Heery, 56, of Bluffton, SC, passed away on September 19, 2023. He was born on April 11, 1967, in Astoria, NY. John was a beloved husband to Colleen Gaitings, a devoted father to Shane Heery and Megan Heery, a proud grandfather to Tristan Heery, and a cherished brother to Jim Heery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Heery and James Heery.
John had a passion for the simple things in life. He enjoyed sitting by a fire pit, sipping on a Michelob Ultra, and listening to classic rock music. John's perfect hair was a source of pride for him, and he was known for his unwavering patriotism and love for his country. As a Hill Boy for life, he cherished spending time with his family, watching Wheel of Fortune and The Price is Right, and going to the casino with loved ones. He also had a deep love for his Irish heritage.
John spent his career serving his community as a member of the NYC Sanitation Department. He bravely participated in the cleanup efforts following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and was considered a hero for his service to his country.
In his free time, John indulged in his hobbies, which included collecting Zippo lighters, collecting gnomes, admiring classic muscle cars, some of which he bought, and passionately supporting the NY Mets and NY Jets. Wherever he went, his cooler and Michelob Ultra went with him. A true adventurer, he loved riding his Harley Davidson and GTO.
