John Hunter passed away on April 16, 2025, at the age of 75, leaving behind a life defined by quiet strength, unwavering love, and deep devotion to those he held dear. At the center of it all was his beloved wife, Zoe Hunter, whom he adored without reservation. Their bond was a testament to true partnership — rooted in mutual respect, everyday laughter, and an enduring kind of love that never had to shout to be heard.
John was a proud graduate of Dothan High School, Class of 1968. Following high school, he attended and graduated from Marion Institute, where he served in Public Relations and Administration. His early talents for communication and organization laid the foundation for a lifetime of meaningful work.
Throughout his life, John wore many hats — managing a coliseum, owning and operating a luxury men’s clothing store, and serving as the administrative assistant to Mr. Charles Fraser, the visionary developer of Hilton Head Island. But it was in his work for the last 31 years that John found his true calling and lasting legacy — serving as the Administrative Manager of Sea Pines Cemetery and overseeing all memorial arrangements at Six Oaks Memorial Garden. His compassion, attention to detail, and deep respect for families during their most difficult times left a mark that will not be forgotten.
John loved history — a passion instilled in him by his mother, a dedicated historian. He took immense pride in his heritage as a descendant of Thomas West, Third Baron De La Warr, Governor of Virginia in 1609 and savior of the colony during the Starving Time of 1610. John carried that legacy of perseverance, leadership, and service with quiet dignity. A true patriot at heart, he honored the sacrifices and foundations upon which this country was built and lived his life with a profound respect for its history and its people.
John loved to tell stories. Whether it was a tale from his younger days, a memory shared around the dinner table, or a well-worn joke told for the tenth time — if John was talking, you wanted to listen. His stories had a way of making you feel like you were right there with him, part of something meaningful, something true. Through them, he connected generations and reminded us all of where we came from.
To know John was to know reliability, kindness, and the comfort of someone who could be counted on, always. He was a man of few pretenses and deep substance. He didn’t chase the spotlight — he simply showed up, again and again, for the people he loved.
He is survived by his wife, Zoe Hunter; his siblings, William Hunter, Mary Bolden, and Martha Moreland; and many extended family members and friends who will carry his memory forward with love and gratitude. His steady presence, warm heart, and fierce love for Zoe will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Life honoring John will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC 29910.
John loved life, loved style, and believed in looking your best. In his honor, we ask you to wear something elegant, with a touch of color if you wish — just as he would have.
John Hunter was a good man. A steady man. A man who loved “the wife” with his whole heart — and that, perhaps, is the greatest legacy of all.
