On Monday, April 20th Hardeeville, South Carolina lost a beloved husband, a cherished father, and a local racing legend when David Into passed away. David loved all things outdoors, taking every opportunity he could to fish and shrimp the local waters. He had a gentle, kind way with all of God's creatures.
David graduated from Hardeeville High School in 1957 and studied at The University of South Carolina before joining the U.S. Army. For most of his career he worked in downtown Savannah for Gunn, Meyerhoff, and Shay as a draftsman helping to design buildings of all varieties.
Many local residents know David best for his more than 20-year career racing at Oglethorpe Speedway where he won ten late model points championships in twelve years. He was a fixture on victory lane, even winning a Southeast Winston Racing Series National Championship in 1984. He retired from racing in 1994 with a host Oglethorpe Speedway records, many likely never to be broken.
He is survived by his wife, Lou Ella Butler Into of Hardeeville, SC; son, Hubert O'Neil Into (Marie) of Bloomingdale, GA; stepson, Robert Randal Cooler of Hardeeville, SC; daughter, Pamela Into Kuchar (Andy) of Woodstock, GA; brother, D. J. Into, Jr. (Helen) of Hardeeville, SC; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Purrysburg Cemetery in Hardeeville, SC. The family will receive friends beginning 9:30 am until 10:30 at Sauls Funeral Home Chapel, 310 W. Adams Avenue, Ridgeland, SC.
