John "C.J" (Captain John) Lattman
December 4, 1954- November 26, 2013
The Shelter Cove Harbour and Harbour Town community lost one of the best captains they ever had and one of the best boat mechanics on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
John "C.J" (Captain John) Lattman, a longtime Hilton Head resident loved his time on the Lowcountry waterways. His love of the sea began as a child sailing in Miami, Fla. He later raced in international Hobie Cat competitions in France as well as around the United States. He had his Merchant Marine license through the USCG.
C.J. loved telling stories of the sea and the Lowcountry he loved. He taught many how to fish, sail and navigate the area waters. On the shore and the sea, he provided encouragement, empathy and a listening ear.
Prior to his almost 30 years in Hilton Head, he served ten years in the U.S. Air Force in the Comm. Squadron 31st Technical Fighter Wing at Homestead, 552nd Air Control Wing at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City, and Special Forces at Tyndall AFB in Panama City.
He is survived by his father Harry Lattman of Lauderhill, Florida, his children Katherine Lattman of Los Angeles, CA, and William Lattman of Rock Hill, SC.; his siblings Barbara Dugan of Ringgold, GA; Linda Stern and husband Rick of Weston, FL; Douglas Lattman and wife Melissa of St. Pete Beach, FL; nieces and nephews Josh Stern and wife Ana, Dianah Dugan and Philip Dugan; great-niece Lailah Stern.
A Celebration of C.J.'s life will be held at 5:00 p.m., Friday, November 29, 2013 at Central Church where he regularly fellowshipped and worshiped. He found solace in songs of praise to Jesus His Lord and Savior. Humming and tapping his toes to worship songs until his final hours in the Palmetto State as he joined the saints triumphant.
Please wear blue at C.J.'s request to the Celebration of his life.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Central Church of Hilton Head or United Hospice of South Carolina.
