John R. Johnson, Sr.

John Robert Johnson, Sr. of Bluffton, SC, formerly of Lake Winnisquam, NH and Syosset, NY passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2024, with family by his side. John was born in The Bronx, New York on August 2, 1938, to John and Sigrid (Agren) Johnson.

Loving husband of Shirley. Devoted father of Jayne (Robert) O’Gorman, Jay, and Tara (Matthew) Smith; beloved “Poppy” to Sydney, Travis, Kaela, Norah, and Shauna; great-grandfather to Sawyer; and stepfather to Keefe and Nicole.

He is predeceased by his brother, Bertil and sister, Elsie.

John was a New York City Firefighter (FDNY) who retired after 28 years of service, and former owner of Monarch Carpet in Plainview, NY. He always loved adventure and enjoyed skiing, hunting, kayaking, and playing pickleball. He spent the last 30+ years traveling far and wide with Shirley. “Jolly Old John” always had a kind word, a quick smile, and was a member of the Church of the Cross in Bluffton.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00am, Wednesday, May 22, 2024, The Church of the Cross; Historic Campus, 110 Calhoun St, Bluffton, SC.
