Joseph A. Adams, Jr., 88, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2026, in Bluffton, South Carolina, surrounded by the love and memories of a life well lived. Born on July 18, 1938, in Richmond, Virginia, he was the son of the late Joseph A. Adams, Sr. and Rosa Adams.
Joe lived a full and meaningful life, making memories and friendships along the way. He proudly served in the Air National Guard and found great enjoyment in the things he loved, especially playing tennis and sharing his love of music as a member of the Hilton Head Big Band. Whether on the tennis court, enjoying music, or spending time with those closest to him, Joe appreciated the simple pleasures that made life special.
Above all, family was an important part of Joe’s life. He shared 65 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Stella M. Adams, building a lifetime of memories together. He was a loving father to his daughters, Julie Dafler and her husband, Doug Dafler, and Stephanie Phillips. His family continued to grow through his grandchildren, Alexandra Campbell (Joe), Taylor Switzer (Graham), Connor Spill (Nate), Garrett Phillips, and Joey Phillips, and his seven great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Maverick, JJ, Patton, Stella, Emory, and Grady, who brought so much joy to his life.
Joe is also survived by his brother-in-law, Carl Spain, and sister-in-law, Lynn Adams. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Marian Spain, and his brother, Larry Adams.
Though our hearts are heavy with his passing, we are grateful for the many years, memories, laughter, and love we shared with Joe. He leaves behind a family who loved him dearly and a lifetime of memories that will forever hold a special place in their hearts. He will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Joe’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Humane Society of Hilton Head.
The family would like to extend a very special thank-you to Gentiva Hospice for the kindness, compassion, and loving care they provided to Joe and his family during this time.
