Joseph Sellers Kite III, 85 of Hilton Head Island, SC died Wednesday, April 9, 2014.
Mr. Kite was born in Marion, Pennsylvania on December 7, 1928, the son of the late Joseph Sellers Kite Jr. and Louise Haddon Kite. He was a 1946 graduate of Bala Cynwyd High School where he excelled in track and soccer. Under a soccer scholarship, he continued his formal education at the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business where he earned a degree in accounting, graduating in 1950. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Upon graduation from Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he was assigned to work with the Auditor General. He was stationed in Japan and the Philippines. During this period of time, he met and married Shirley MacPhee. After four years of service with the U.S. Air Force, he received an honorable discharge and returned to southeastern Pennsylvania. For thirty-five years, J. Sellers Kite worked at Bentley Harris as executive vice president where he invented fourteen patents. J. Sellers Kite was an avid golfer, creative genius, loving and devoted husband and father.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley MacPhee Kite. He is survived by his son, David Sellers Kite and daughter-in-law, Mary Coyle Kite.
