Joseph Charles Laguna

August 24, 1959 — February 21, 2018

It is with a heavy heart to announce that Joseph Charles Laguna passed away on February 21, 2018, inBeaufort, South Carolina with his wife Sharon of 34 years and family by his side. Joey had been hospitalized and diagnosed with lung cancer on February 4, 2018 and he lost the fight at the age of 58. Joe was born August 24, 1959 in King City, California to Pete and Lina Laguna. He attended Greenfield Elementary School and King City High School. He lived and grew up in Greenfield. As a young Joey, he loved working with his Dad, working on truck or anything mechanical for that matter and excelled at all things FFA and shop. Joey joined the United States Navy in 1979 without a word, and how proud his family was of his Navy career. He and Sharon met and married, in 1983 as he began his second enlistment. With many adventures and ports of call under his cover, Joey retired with honors in 1999, as Machinery Repairman First Class Surface Warfare (MR1(SW)) Joseph C. Laguna. There were several passions in Joe’s life. For the first few years of retirement he loved the competiveness of bass fishing and there was nothing like whipping those guys in his bass clubs on their own waters. His one passion that followed him from childhood was the joy of growing things. Joe always had to have the best looking yard in the neighborhood and not to mention the best veggies anywhere. Hydroponics found its way into his heart and there was no stopping his wonderful tomatoes and peppers, he loved sharing this with everyone. It was a true education for all. All that said, Joe’s greatest passion came in 2008, when their Granddaughter Shelby was born. It was then his life began a new sphere of revolution. Joey joins his father, Santos “Pete” Laguna and brother and best friend Pete Anthony Laguna for eternity. Joe is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Laguna of Beaufort, SC, Stepdaughters April Bakken of Washington, DC and Jessica Bradshaw, granddaughter his beloved Shelby of Beaufort, SC, his mother Lina Laguna, sister Deanna “Nan” Spurling , and husband Will Carpenter, niece Felicia Spurling and nephew Pete Spurling all of Hemet, CA and his extended family and friends throughout the world that meant so much to him. A memorial service will be held on 4 March 2018 at 1500 (3pm civilian time) at Meadow Brook Baptist Church, 12 Lupo Drive, Beaufort, SC 29907 to celebrate Joe’s life. At a date to be announced there will also be a family and friend celebration to spread his ashes in Beaufort. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joey’s memory to King City High School FFA Boosters, a 501(c)3, Non-Profit Organization, Meadow Brook Baptist Church, 12 Lupo Drive, Beaufort, SC 29907.
