Joseph F. X. Levey, February 18th, 2014, 90 years old (1923 - 2014)
Joseph Levey passed away on February 18th in sleep close to his family. He was 90 years old. He is survived by his three children; Joan L. Gormley, Kathy A. Levey (Bluffton, SC), Jim, Laura and grandson TJ (Atlanta, GA). His late wife (Eileen D. Levey) passed way eight years earlier. Joe lived a long prosperous life and he was born in Yonkers, NY. At the age of 19 he joined the Army Air force and earned his wings flying B-17's for the 53rd (experimental weather) Recognition squadron in 1942. This group later was known as the Hurricane hunters. Being discharged in 1946, he immediately joined the Air Force Reserves at the Westerchester county air station where he rose to the rank of Colonel before leaving after his service. At the same time, he attended Columbia School of Architecture in New York City receiving an education in architectural design. His first job was with Rogers, Butler and Bergun (RBB) in NYC, an architectural firm that specialized in hospital design. Some of the more notable projects he worked on were the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC, Buffalo General in NY State, and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital project in 1958. After leaving RBB, he was hired at Merritt and Harris Inc,(M&H) Construction Consultants to the Real Estate Lending & Investment Community. He was a Vice President during his tenure with M & H and oversaw millions of dollar of investments on behalf of his clients. In 1987, he retired with his wife Eileen to Hilton Head, SC where he spent his final days near his two daughters. Joseph and wife were both active volunteers in the community surrounding Hilton Head & Bluffton, SC.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 333 Fording Island Road, Bluffton with burial at 1:00 pm in the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC. The family will receive friends from 5 til 7 pm on Monday, February 24, 2014 at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Rd., Bluffton, SC.
