Joyce H. Tartow, 77, of Bluffton, SC and formerly of New York died Friday, March 20, 2015 at Coastal Carolina Medical Center.
Mrs. Tartow was born on August 15, 1937 in Manhattan, New York, the daughter of the late Jack and Sadie S. Cohen. She received her formal education from Hunter College and ultimately Manhattan College, where she earned a Master's Degree in Educational Administration. She was a longtime teacher with the public school system of New York and subsequently was an adjunct teacher at Mercy College. She retired to Sun City-Hilton Head, SC where she was very active within the community. She participated with the bocce team, the bowling league, and enjoyed playing mahjong, samba, and canasta. She was also an avid gardener. She was a teacher for the driver's safety program at Sun City and was recognized as Teacher of the Year for two years in a row. She was the founder of Wheels and Meals and was a finalist for the Jefferson Award for her community service. She was also recognized by WSAV in Savannah for her community efforts.
Mrs. Tartow is survived by her daughters, Ina Segnit (George) of Milton, NY and Robin Tartow of Seattle, WA; son, Randy Tartow (Colleen) of Boston, MA; sister, Lila Mait of Charlottesville, VA; brother, Ronald Cohen of Toronto; grandchildren, Jackson Segnit and Sam Tartow; several nieces and nephews and a host of extended family. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Col. Martin B. Mait.
A visitation was held Monday, March 23, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon with the funeral service beginning at 12:00 noon at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, SC 29910. Burial followed the service at Six Oaks Cemetery, Sea Pines, Hilton Head, SC.
