Laird Bennie Spencer, affectionately known as LB, passed away on July 7, 2024, at the age of 81.
Laird was born August 29, 1942 and raised in Rochester, Michigan. He committed to the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) at Eastern Michigan University. Upon graduation he was commissioned as second lieutenant in the US Army and served in Vietnam. Following his active duty, he was recruited by Michigan Bell Telephone Company for their management training program, where he met and married Susan. Laird ultimately achieved the position of Division Manager, and retiring from ATT after twenty-nine years of dedicated service.
As an active member and sailor at the Detroit Yacht Club, he served as club Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore, and Commodore. He captained his own sailboat through the Great Lakes extensively with his own family. Working toward achieving an old goat status, he completed twenty-three Port Huron to Mackinac races as a crew team member and chief cook. Having enjoyed many vacations in South Carolina, Hilton Head became home. Laird continued in leadership roles during his retirement. Sailing was replaced with golf, motor homing throughout the US, and many volunteer positions for the annual Heritage Golf Tournament. Laird also found a worthy calling in the education of young minds by substitute teaching in the SC public school system.
Laird is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-six years, Susan, his adoring daughter, Tracee, and loving son-in-law, Larenzo, and a cherished grandson, Adrian.
