Larry Oliver Naylor, 78, of Callawassie Island, Okatie, SC, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2024. Since 2011 Larry has fought a long battle with Parkinson’s.
He was born on February 1, 1946, in Roseboro, North Carolina. He grew up in Sampson County, NC where, as a young boy, his family picked cotton and cropped tobacco for a living.
He was a 1964 graduate of Central High School in Fayetteville, NC. After graduation, Larry joined the United States Air Force and served as an Air Traffic Controller (GCA Senior Controller) in the United States and England until 1968. In 1966 he was selected as the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing’s “Outstanding Airman of the Quarter” gaining this award from the Wing’s complement of 3200 airmen. He worked for Carolina Telephone (Reuben Donnelley Corp) in North Carolina and Virginia from 1969-1970. The next 8 years, 1971-1978 Larry was District Manager for Atlantic Ice for Munford, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia where he met his wife, Gale.
In 1981 he joined with three other partners out of the Raleigh/Lumberton, NC area and ran the ice plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Triangle Ice Company so named for the Triangle Research area of NC, eventually becoming the sole owner. Larry bought and sold ice companies in Columbia, SC; Charleston, SC; Beaufort, SC; and Savannah, GA before he and Gale settled in Beaufort, SC in January of 1989 and moved onto Callawassie Island, Okatie, SC in December of 1989. He ran the manufacturing of Triangle Ice Co. out of Beaufort on Boundary St. (Walgreens) and Robert Smalls Parkway (bottom of the Broad River Bridge) until he consolidated all operations in Savannah, GA. He retired in 2007 and turned the operation over to his partner.
He enjoyed boating having had several boats including losing one in Hurricane Hugo in 1989 at Wild Dunes in Charleston, SC. He was on the Board of the Club Group at Harbourtown Marina at Sea Pines, Hilton Head for many years, and instrumental in the financing and implementation of the second “gazebo” dock built on Callawassie.
He veered off into the restaurant business opening the Spaghetti Club in Habersham with his friend and partner where they rocked and rolled for a couple years before realizing he made ice better than food!
