Bluffton Resident, LaWanda Jackson (Hynum), has graduated from her battle with cancer into the arms of our Lord on the 29th of January at the age of 69. Born and raised in Jackson, MS, she graduated Provine High School, class of 1964. Her career in Information Technology took her from Vicksburg, MS, to Slidell, LA, Huntsville AL, and finally found herself in the Hilton Head area in 1999 to work for Hargray Communications until she retired in 2013. Not quite ready to sit at home, she started working for a local Audi dealership, delivering cars to customers. She very much enjoyed driving the high-performance vehicles for the dealership, and commented often on the very nice customers she had the pleasure of chatting with, as well as the Audi dealership family, whom she adored dearly. When she was diagnosed with cancer, she retired from Audi as well. Having played piano for her church, she then began playing for the local Nursing Home residents of Life Care Center of Hilton Head Island. The beauty and power of her music was evident in the lively responses her hymns brought out in those that heard her play. LaWanda was the kind of person that never met a stranger. She was loving and kind, and always stood ready to help someone in need, especially her family. Her concern and attention for her family was only eclipsed by her love of Jesus, and living her life in His service, showing love and compassion for anyone and everyone around her. She was an admirable example of His love, consideration, and empathy for others, often bringing life to the room just by being present. She is preceded by her father and mother, Claude and Reba Jackson, of Jackson MS. She is survived by her daughter and son, Mindy Sims of Huntsville, AL, and Greg Hynum of Charlotte NC, as well as Michael Sims, and Angela Hynum, her children-in-law that she loved dearly. Her grandchildren also held a very special place in her heart; Anna Sims, Caleb Sims, and Erin Sims. Even simply hearing their names would bring a smile to her face. She is also survived by her brothers, Claude Jackson, Jr. of Marshall, TX, and Kerry Jackson of Atlanta, GA, as well as her sisters-in-law, Sandra Jackson, and Twyla Jackson, respectively. Of special note is her cousin, Juanice Tullos, who lived with LaWanda since 2002 after visiting and deciding that Hilton Head Island was too beautiful to leave. Having been able to attend her son’s college graduation (after 22 years of waiting), and spending Christmas with her family, Jesus decided it was time for to have this angel by his side on Friday, January 29th, 2016. She will be remembered by her beautiful smile, witty personality, noble heart, and giving nature. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 13th, at Red Dam Baptist Church, 488 Red Dam Church Rd, Hardeeville, SC 29927. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Her family thanks everyone for their support, love, and prayers during her battle, and to be at peace knowing that she is Home now.
