Layne Reed Carver of Hilton Head Island, SC, died at his home on Friday, September 8, 2023. He was 76. Layne was born on August 6, 1947 in Basile, LA and grew up in St. Paul, MN. After high school, like so many of his peers, he fought in Vietnam; he was highly decorated for his service and pursued a military career with the MN National Guard, where he served until he retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Layne was known for is calm voice and pale blue eyes. He had a love of dining out, telling stories and getting into the nitty gritty of a thing---anything. His thirst for knowledge was vast, and he shared whatever he knew with friends and strangers; he also sought new ideas through conversation and frequently spoke of the value of the mixed points of view of the Roedler Forum. He played backgammon and watched indie films and drank cognac (once with Bill Murray). He loved music, including the Zydeco of his Cajun heritage. But most of all he loved the feeling of stepping onto a dock before a sail---whether that dock was on White Bear Lake, the Canary Islands or the Caribbean---with his wife, Mary. The two of them traveled together constantly and with ease, both on and off the water. Their partnership was a point of pride for him, and she was his perfect “first mate” through their many adventures. They were together 30 years. Layne will be cherished and spoken of forever by his many friends and family; he is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marvelle (Sonnier) Carver. He is survived by his wife, Mary Montour; children Steven (Kristin) Carver, Autumn (Justin) Hilden, and Jonathan Carver; brother Nick (Lori) Carver; close friends aka the Knuckleheads; as well as many other friends and family who will probably never stop toasting him when they gather.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Midland Hills Country Club in Roseville, MN on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023 from 1:00-3:00pm.
